John Mutter’s definition of Sustainable Development: Sustainable Development means continued prosperity shared globally and achieved without dire consequences for the very environment that is necessary for our continued wellbeing.

Brundtland Commission definition: “Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”

Government Agencies

UN DSD (United Nations Division of Sustainable Development) – promotes SD as the substantive secretariat to the UN Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD).

US EPA (United States Environmental Protection Agency) Climate Change Home – public information resource on issues related to climate change.

US EPA Sustainability Home –  provides information on EPA’s research activites and programs related to sustainability.

Private Organizations:

(WRI) World Resources Institute – environmental think tank focusing on people & ecosystems, governance, climate protection, and markets & enterprise.

Non-profits:

Air and Waste Management Associationnonprofit, nonpartisan organization providing a neutral forum for information exchange, professional development, networking opportunities, public education, and outreach to environmental professionals around the globe.

Envirolink – environmental clearinghouse with a plethora of links relating to environmental issues and sustainable development.

(IISD) International Institute for Sustainable Development – Canadian-based non-profit policy research organization dedicated to information dissemination, engaging decision-makers in government, business, NGOs and other sectors in the development and implementing policies that are benefit the global economy, environment, and overall social well-being.

Community:

cleanenergy.org – a community of energy experts dedicated to information dissemination on topics related to renewable energy and cleantech.

Natural Resources and Sustainable Development a community forum dedicated to providing information concerning the interface of natural resources (such as minerals, oil and gas, biodiversity, energy, and water) with the economy, the environment and society.
